We are looking for passionate, motivated, and talented individuals to join the Spheres of Influence team! If you have writing, editorial, marketing, social media, or web design skills, we would love to have you. Please note that we are entirely volunteer-based.

We deeply value having input from a diverse range of individuals. In addition to making global affairs more accessible, we strive for inclusivity on our platform and especially encourage contributions from people who are Black, Indigenous, of colour, living with disabilities, of different religions and cultural backgrounds, and identify within the LGBTQ2+ community.

Current Opportunities

Staff Writer (Volunteer)

We are looking to hire dedicated, passionate, and talented writers to join our team. As part of the Spheres of Influence volunteer staff, you will contribute two articles per month to be published on our website. Your work will become part of our initiative to spread awareness about underreported global issues, and you will have the freedom to write about topics you’re knowledgeable and passionate about.

This is an ideal opportunity for students, recent graduates, and young professionals to have your work published and build your portfolio while playing a key role in the growth of our website. 

This role is fully volunteer and requires around 3 hours per week.

Spheres of Influence is a non-profit digital publication dedicated to highlighting underreported issues in global affairs. In doing so, we work to amplify marginalized voices and provide low-barrier opportunities for youth to gain experience in journalism. We are based in so-called Vancouver, BC on unceded xʷməθkʷəy̓əm territory and publish articles from young writers in Canada and across the globe.

Responsibilities

  • Write two articles (800-1200 words) every month 
  • Work closely with a team of editors and make necessary changes when needed
  • Attend monthly team meetings

Staff writers will also have the opportunity to (optional but not required)

  • Write content for our newsletter
  • Occasionally work with the social media team to make articles into social media posts and infographics
  • Lead and participate in round-table discussions about the issues discussed in your articles

Qualifications

  • Strong writing skills
  • Critical thinking skills
  • The ability to convey complex topics in an accessible and engaging way without academic tone and jargon
  • Passionate about global affairs, human rights, politics, the environment, and social justice
  • An understanding of the importance of taking an intersectional and decolonial approach to global affairs

Senior Editor (Volunteer)

We are looking to hire dedicated and passionate editors to join our team. As part of the Spheres of Influence volunteer staff, you will edit two-three articles per week to be published on our website. Your work will be part of our initiative to spread awareness about underreported global issues.

This is an ideal opportunity for students, recent graduates, and young professionals to gain editorial experience while playing a key role in the growth of our website. 

This role is fully volunteer and requires around 3-5 hours per week.

In doing so, we work to amplify marginalized voices and provide low-barrier opportunities for youth to gain experience in journalism.   • Work in other areas of the organization including social media and marketing
  • Participate in editorial training opportunities and round-table discussions

Guest Submissions

We are always happy to receive guest submissions that align with our mission and values. We accept a broad range of articles on issues related to global affairs, politics, human rights, the environment, and more. Submissions should be roughly 800-1,200 words in length.

Before submitting anything please read through the instructions and description of our editing process below:

  1. Read through our Writing Style Guide found here to acquaint yourself with Spheres of Influence’s values, voice, audience, and technical writing requirements
  2. Fill out our pitch template found here 
  3. Your pitch will be reviewed by the Editor-in-Chief who will then directly contact you by email informing you whether your pitch has been approved, rejected, or needs to be reworked. 
  4. Once your pitch is approved, please write and submit a final draft
  5. Our editing team will add suggestions and edits to your article. The Editor-in-Chief will alert you as to when each round of those edits is done and whether you need to make changes or adjustments.
  6. Your article will be published
  7. Share your article on social media!

REMINDERS: Any article submission must be your own original work that has not already been published elsewhere, whether that be online or in print. Any form of plagiarism is unacceptable. 

Final drafts must be submitted in Google Doc format with the settings updated so that anyone with the link can add edits

We require you include sources in your articles. Do not include a formal bibliography or works cited. Instead, sources should be included as hyperlinks embedded in the text. If your article does not contain hyperlinks, it will not be accepted.
