About Us
Spheres of Influence is a non-profit digital publication dedicated to highlighting underreported stories in global affairs and amplifying marginalized voices. In short, we are passionate about making complex topics accessible to everyone while offering a refreshing alternative to the mainstream media.
We launched in September 2020 and are based out of Vancouver, BC on the unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and Sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. However, we aim to provide a platform for youth across the globe to voice their perspectives and publish their work.
We are entirely youth-led and volunteer-based and rely on reader donations to keep us running.
Our Mission
We find that too often, the discussions surrounding the world’s most pressing issues are bogged down with overly academic jargon and reserved only for the elite. At Spheres of Influence, we hope to break down these barriers and include more people in the conversation by explaining and analyzing issues in global affairs in an accessible and engaging way.
We have also found that much of the Western mainstream media tends to broadcast over and over again, while other critical issues that may not be as geopolitically ‘sexy’ tend to slip under the radar. To combat this, we highlight underreported issues with the intention of drawing more awareness to them. In doing so, we hope that our readers will gain a more holistic understanding of the world’s challenges.
Finally, we seek to amplify the voices of the youth, as this is the next generation of global change-makers. Spheres of Influence provides low barrier opportunities for youth in Canada and across the globe to gain meaningful experience in journalism and voice their perspectives and experiences.
Support our initiative to highlight underreported stories and amplify marginalized voices. Keep non-profit journalism alive.
