Who are we?

Spheres of Influence is a non-profit digital publication dedicated to explaining and analyzing issues in international relations and global affairs in an accessible and engaging way. In short, we are passionate about making complex topics accessible to everyone while offering a refreshing alternative to the mainstream media. We are based out of Vancouver, Canada, on the unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and Sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. However, we aim to provide a platform for youth across the globe to voice their perspectives and publish their work and our team is comprised of talented and passionate young individuals from across the globe.

What sets us apart?

There are many things that set us apart from mainstream news organizations. We find that, unfortunately, the majority of the mainstream media tends to be deeply influenced by Western influences and geopolitical imperatives. As a result, the same issues are typically broadcasted over and over again, while other critical issues don’t receive nearly enough coverage. Also, we find that mainstream media often doesn’t provide enough context to fully explain the background and significance of major global events.

To combat this, we have chosen to focus on shining a light on underreported issues with the intention of drawing more awareness to them. We also seek to unpack and explain the deeper political, historical, economic, and social contexts behind many of the highly complex topics and events we see today. In doing so, we hope that our readers will gain a more holistic understanding of the world’s challenges.

Finally, we ensure that our articles are factually driven and properly sourced. In the age of disinformation, this is especially important. However, we do not require our writers to be non-biased in their articles. We believe that in certain cases, neutrality often serves to benefit the oppressor and often isn’t the most productive approach.
